Axe Cliff Covid Cup joy for Caroline and Steve Bond

The Axe Cliff Covid Cup was started last year when Barbara Cummings found an old silver trophy and decided it should be played for in a mixed pairs competition to commemorate the Covid-19 pandemic, writes Dave Bruce.

As was the case the year before, the competition was played out as a stableford better ball event and contested over two successive Mondays.

After the first round of matches the destiny of the Covid Cup was certainly ‘in the balance’ with just a single point separating half-a-dozen couples.

What made the closeness of the round one scored was the fact that the conditions were on the breezy side with the occasional hail storm thrown in!

After round two the winners, with a score of 79 points, were Caroline and Steve Bond who retained the trophy they won last year.

The winners were pushed all the way by the partnership of Janet Dack and Paul Curtin.

Everyone who took part enjoyed the competition and it is hoped that next year, when everything becomes a little more normal, we can repeat the experience and follow it with a meal.
