Axe Cliff Golf Club hosting two free Open Days

Axe Cliff Golf Club are holding two free Open Days this coming weekend (Saturday, July 24 and Sunday, July 25), writes Dave Bruce.

Yes, FREE, they very much are and, for  those who do book in they will receive lessons, a little play and free drink and food to round things off.

Booking for either of these days can be done by calling the club on 01297 21754.

There’s been plenty of recent action for the club and, on a beautiful Wednesday last week the ladies were in action and Stella Thompson took the honours with a nett 76 medal round.

She was pushed all the way by both Pauline Willis and Paula Heasman who had to use their back six scores to determine second and third and second went to Pauline with 36 with Paula having to settle for third with her 38.

Axe Cliff Seniors’ had another good turnout for the  prestigious Founders Trophy, Medford Cup.

The trophy, which had been lost, was discovered in an Auction lot in 2009 by former club vice captain Brian Blackwood.

It was generously given back to the senior section and has been played for every year since 2010.

The first nine holes are played as a Medal less your handicap allowance and the back nine as a Stableford.

The number of Stableford points are then deducted from the net Medal scores. On our course, the net par on the first nine is 36, so, if you got a par stableford score of 18 on the back nine, you would finish with an 18 par score – still with me ?

Being Seniors, we were given clear and helpful instructions on how to score and, thankfully, 86 years-young, Geoff Hughes, allowed me to do our scoring otherwise we would not have got round in our usual four-and-a-half hours, though that time does  include lunch being taken sitting on Sid and Rose Pember’s bench on the 10th tee overlooking the Bay!

The contest was a close one with a mighty tight finish! We ended with three players on two under par, 16. It was good to see handicap secretary, Chris Read come out on top with his back nine score of 22 points.

David Morgan was edged into second place as a result of his 20 points on the back nine and John Purdy had to settle for third place with his back nine adding up to 19 points.

Don’t forget this weekend’s Open Days – the number to call is 01297 21754.
