Axe Cliff ladies contested their first Medal round in some time and also managed to plat the first round of the Freddie Newberry Cup which is a putting competition, writes Dave Bruce.
In the Medal round the honours went to the Karin Cox with a solid net 74 and second place went to the Jo Hopgood with a nett 76, Jo also leads after the opening round of the Freddie Newberry Cup, and third place in the Medal went to Jill Wellington with her 77.
Meanwhile, Axe Cliff Seniors contested the annual Yellow Ball competition and did so in teams of three.
This competition is not for the faint hearted as the yellow ball passes each hole to a different team player and, whoever has it, then his stableford score is doubled so the pressure is on him not only to score, but, more importantly, not to lose it as the team also loses the opportunity to score double thereafter. It is the best two scores on each hole that counts.
The trio of Dave Weston, Brian Thompson and Tony Strong were trying to retain the trophy they have held for the past few years and they did indeed bag a podium spot once more, but this time it was for third place after they scored a very credible 93 points.
The new champions are the team of Andy Hopgood, Simon Wellington and Kyle Phillpots who scored a fine 106.
Second place went to the trio of David Evans, Adrian Bishop and Richard Orsman with
The team of yours truly, Mark Wisby and Bob Cook were a little careless after scoring 61 points on the first nine and even managed 11 points on one particular hole with a net eagle and net birdie. We wont mention the second nine, and losing the yellow ball on the 16th, but we had a strong wind to contend with being the tailenders!
We wish our Emerton Court team every success for this week’s home round match against Mortehoe.
