Blues boys off to join the Otters

Ottery St Mary have made another significant signing with the appointment of a new Under-18 team manager and head coach.

During the recent lockdown, Ottery chairman Mikey Ringer was looking to bridge the operational ‘gap’ between the youth section and adult section at Washbrook Meadows and now he would appear to have ‘got his man’ following the news that David Haggerty, who has nurtured a youth team through the age groups to its current status of Brixington Blues Under-16s will become the Otters’ Under-18 manager and head coach.

The Ottery chairman says: “David has been with Brixington Blue for many seasons now and has had a very successful career so far, and it’s that level of success, and desire for more success that drew me to him.

David will be looking to build a strong squad for the campaign and support all youth age groups in their development and preparations for when they are ready for Under-18s football.

“This under 18s squad will provide a stepping stone for our current youth players before they become adult players to play in anyone of our first team, reserve team and development squad team in the coming seasons.”

The Ottery chairman continued: “I’m hugely excited to of secured the services of David and his coaches for the coming season, we see this as the next part of the jigsaw falling into place as the club continue to follow a road map I have put in place.

“David is a well respected in the game and is a successful manager throughout his time in youth football. Indeed, he has produced many great players, with his coaching staff in place it will not only look to support the senior section as the boys come of age, but also he will work closely across the board in terms of our youth set up.”

For his part, the new man at the U18 helm [Dave Haggerty] says: “I have been coaching Youth Football for 11 years now and I have enjoyed every minute of it, even the bad times that come with youth football, every day is a learning day when you coach the youth.

Brixington Blues has supported me from day one. It will feel like an end of an era when I move to the next step, but I am very excited about what lies ahead with the Under-18s at Ottery St Mary.”

Haggerty continued: “Brixington Blues Chairman Richard Taylor has supported the decision that we move to Ottery St Mary to take that next step and give the boys a great pathway into men’s football.

“I started talking to Mikey Ringer about coming across and giving our boys the pathway, they deserve. With the three men’s teams that Ottery have, I know that all my boys will take their opportunities and work towards getting themselves into the development team with the main goal of becoming a first teamer one day.

Over the years of coaching I have achieved my level two coaching qualification, I have tried to book my UEFA B, but due to COVID-19, it was not possible. Hopefully, in time I can take that next step once things start getting back to normal.

I will be joined at Ottery by three very keen coaches who will help me; Chris Drew-Cull, Steve Paramore and Gary Ayley and I know all three are really looking forward to starting the Under-18s team and getting to meet everyone at Ottery St Mary.”

Back to chairman Mikey Ringer for the final say on this: “This next phase of development on the pitch for Ottery St Mary AFC is vital and we cannot wait to welcome David, his team and the squad to the club. I’d urge anyone reading this who would like to be part of this exciting new phase for Ottery St Mary AFC, as a player, volunteer or as a commercial partner, to get in touch and we will make sure you are connected with the right department of our club.”

Ottery St Mary are keen to go on record with sincere and grateful thanks to all the clubs’ partners.
