Two first half goals, a third in the second half and some excellent goalkeeping from Russ Bracey helped  Brixington Blues Under-16s to a 3-1 success against Twyford Spartans.

Both teams made bright starts to the contest and it was Blues who launched the first attack, a  move that ended when Oliver Bradley was halted in his tracks by a Twyford defender.

Play switched to the other end of the pitch and glovesman Bracey was called into action for the first time.

In the next Twyford raid a combination of Blues skipper  Jake Haggerty and Connor Madge made sure there was no way through to goal.

The deadlock was broken when, after taking a pass from  Will Lavis, Jack Drew-Cull beat a defender only to see his snap shot parried out by the Twyford glovesman, but only as far as Oliver Bradley who thumped it home to give Blues the lead.

End-to-end football followed and parity was restored when, after a corner fell invitingly to a Twyford strikers feet, he made no mistake, levelling things up.

Twyford went in search of a second, but were kept at arms length by a combination of superb disciplined defending from

Lewis Fulls, Ashton Beck and Lewis Ayley, the trio also looked, at every opportunity, to play the ball out from the back.

Makan Coulibaly and Ethan Hawes then inter-linked prior to a  shot from Drew-Cull flashing just wide of the mark.

Lewis Brooks came off  the bench to play a defensive role and his first act was to show great composure with a fine pass  to skipper Haggerty who in turn finds Lavis and, when he found Bradley, his fierce shot was saved by the goalkeeper and turned away for a corner.

The set piece was well delivered by Bradley and, when the ball arrived at the feet of Ethan Hawes he first showed a superb first touch before drilling the ball home to send Blues into the break with a 2-1 advantage.

Early in the second half a Connor Madge long range shot flew just wide and then Ashton Beck was denied by a smart save.

In the next attack, Alex Quaife provided the assist for a wonderful strike from distance by Hawes who arrowed the ball into the net to make it 3-1.

Twyford then threw everything at trying to get back into the contest but they were unable to get the better of the impressive Russ Bracey in the Blue goal.

Blues management duo of Dave Haggerty and Chris Drew-Cull were delighted with the team’s performance.

Next up for Blues is a Devon Cup 1st Rd tie against Sidmouth.
