Budleigh bowlers are finally able to be back in action and Cricket Field Lane was a hive of activity as 33 enthusiastic bowlers took to the green for two round-robin competitions, writes David Roberts.
With the weather playing its part thanks to wall-to-wall sunshine, albeit with a cool breeze that necessitated the players staying ‘on the move’, and a superb surface at their feet, the bowlers soon found their skills and were back to their competitive ways as if they had never been away!
The morning session was won by the trio of Hilary Medley, Ralph Cartwright and Paul Griffin while the runners-up were the team of Melissa Camp, Graham Rant and Bob Gooch.
The afternoon session honours went to Tony Lim, Norman Upchurch and Penny Weeks, who ended the day undefeated while Gwen Hurst, Gordon Marshall and Brian Ward rallied after a first match reversal to take the runners-up berth.
Roll-ups start in earnest during the week on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday at 10am and, whilst competitive matches against other clubs will not start for a few weeks, the club is gearing itself for an enjoyable start to the season.
Budleigh Salterton Bowls Club formed in 1903 and is one of the oldest clubs in Devon, based in a beautiful area and part of an overall club that also includes Tennis and Bridge sections.
The club has six outdoor rinks plus two indoor rinks, a clubhouse with changing rooms, modern kitchen facilities, bar and function rooms where social, Bridge and Mah Jong activities are held. A large free car parking area is provided on the club grounds.
Now is the time for outside activity, so if anyone reading this is interested in trying their hand at bowls, we would love to see them at the club.
Bowls is an incredibly accessible sport, easy to learn the rules and provides a superb social environment, while also retaining the competitive element that gets the juices flowing, no matter your age, ability or previous experience.
