Budleigh see ‘close encounters’ of the bowling kind

The past week has been another of internal competition ‘close encounters’ as the different disciplines being contested by club members reach their final stages, writes David Roberts.

David Tomlinson left it late to book his place in the four wood championship semi-final with a late rally against Andy Skudder, coming back from 17-20 down to score six shots over the last two ends to win 23-20.

In the Ladies four wood championship semi -inal it was Mo Bond who performed a similar feat being 16-20 down to Rosemary Carter and scoring five shots on the last three ends to reach the final.

Andy Cardy was quick out of the blocks against Ralph Cartwright to progress to the four wood final with a convincing 21-14 win whilst Penny Weeks payed well in the 106 semi-final against Gwen Hurst to book her place in the final against Mo Bond.

Penny also was on top form in her two wood semi-final against Hilary Medley and will play Marilyn Foreman in the final who came through 17-12 against Gwen Hurst.

Andy Cardy and Anne Clark combined well to secure their place in the Mixed pairs final winning 18-9 against Robin Grenyer and Mo Bond and will now play Brian Goddard and Gwen Hurst who were dominant in their match against Tony Mackness and Ann Vincent 22-3.

In the last of the Mens Over-60s’ Exeter and District Triples League matches the Budleigh men once again came out on the wrong end of the result against Exonia losing overall 33-43.

Best of the two rinks was that of Paul Griffin, Peter Cooper and Brian Goddard who put up a great fight and came back to just lose out 19-22. Brian Ward, Bob Gooch and David Roberts drew level at 13-13 after a very slow start but couldn’t maintain the momentum and lost out 14-21.

In the coming week the club look forward to hosting Bradninch in a mixed friendly and a combined team from Oxford.
