Phear Park bowlers create a piece of club history

We are grateful to Paul and Kay Beresford for this article.

For the first time in the club’s history, Phear Park have reached the semi-final stages of the Top Club competition.

This format for this competition is a multi-discipline annual event, contested by a number of clubs, including Honiton, which is where the Park team recorded a thrilling 3-2 win.

Victories in both the two-wood and the four-wood  singles’ matches, and success in the triples, secured the overall vin.

Seaton will be the venue for the semi-final with that fixture scheduled to be played on July 22.

In terms of other news, rain and more rain coupled with closures in Phear Park combined to make it very difficult for the club to play many friendlies.

However two matches were completed and both were against Exeter St Thomas.

In the home meeting, Park emerged as 79-48 winners thanks to a fine 25-5 win for Nigel Oates, Joan Cowing and Rod Davidson and a 22-8 success for Jen Derbyshire, John Anderson and Simon Weklawek while the rink of Peter Burch, Rick Tatchell and Brian Halsey, drew 15-all.

Fortunes were reversed in the fixture in Exeter with St Thomas running out as 81-53 in a contest that saw all four Park triples suffer defeat.
