Pulman bags ‘fivefer’ in Upottery win – and they’re all clean bowled!

Upottery continued their climb up the Tolchards Devon League C Division East table – and extended their unbeaten run with an emphatic eight wicket victory over Sandford II at Glebe Park.

It was another master-class from the Upottery bowlers – six were used and four took wickets, but the stand-out shift with the ball came from second change Andrew Pulman who sent down nine overs and returned the splendid figures of 5-23!

Upottery skipper Mark Joyce won the toss and invited his opposite number to bat and Joyce gave the new ball duties to Ben Kidson and Adrian Salter. It was Salter who struck early thanks to catches held by skipper Joyce and Dan Broom to leave the visiting side on 33-2.

It was soon 48-3 with Adam Pulman holding a catch to give Kidson his wicket. It then became the Andrew Pulman show as he claimed a rather unique ‘fivefer’ with all five of his wickets being clean bowled!

But for a last wicket partnership of 28 runs, the Sandford total would not have reach 150!

Apart from those wonderful Pulman figures, the other bowling returns were: Adrian Salter (2-31 from nine), Ben Kidson (1-35 from nine), Paul Wakefield (1-34 from nine), James Mitcham (0-31 from four) and Jack Larcombe (0-20 from 4.5 overs).

Sandford were bowled out for 177 in one ball shy of their full allotment of 45 overs.

The Upottery run chase proved to be a straight forward one. It was launched by Jack Larcombe and Adam Pulman who took the total to 51, when Pulman fell for a well crafted 36. Matt Broom was next in – and out – dismissed  for 12 with the score then 92-2.

James Mitcham took over and he and Larcombe eased their side to a comprehensive win, adding 86 for the unbroken third wicket.

The win was sealed with over 10 overs remaining! Larcombe was unbeaten on 52 while Mitcham was not out 47.

The win leaves Upottery on 116 points and, as  things stand, that is the second best points haul in the C Division East with only Clyst St George (145) sporting more points! However, the table remains somewhat disjointed as Sidmouth II are shown as playing 10 games while both Exmouth II and Braunton II are shown as having played 11.
