 Sidmouth’s indoor campaign begins well

The Sidmouth Indoor Opening Drive players.

Indoor Bowling has begun in earnest and I think most of us are very pleased about that given this awful blustery, rainy weather that has suddenly arrived, writes Carol Smith.

Our Opening Drive was very successful with both sessions pretty full. In the morning session the winners were the team of Annie Eaton, Dutch Holland, Anita Mason and skip Brian Smith with a very impressive score of plus 20 shots.

However, the afternoon session winners did even better recording a wonderful score of plus 25 and they were Pat Hague, Tony Anthony, Ian Dudley and skip Chris Hamer.

As we have just the three indoor rinks, it means we do need to split the days into time slots, but there is something going on most of the day. At present this includes a lot of practise as some of the County Competitions and Leagues start quite early.

We have also played the indoor ‘Ladies versus Gentlemen’ fixture and this was run over two sessions – one before noon and one after noon.

We always look forward to this fixture and it has certainly always been very competitive, but also plenty of fun with lots of banter. Oh yes, and it is always so very well supported.

For this latest meeting we just had enough players for triples rather than the normal rinks (fours).

Our last indoor meeting of the Ladies and Gentlemen was back in October 2019 when the Ladies won well on five of the rinks with the sixth rink resulting in a single shot defeat!

However, this time round we were totally out bowled with the men winning heavily on four of the six rinks. For the Ladies it was a case of: ‘Disaster Darling’!

That said, two of the ladies’ afternoon rinks did win, but nothing like enough to cover the losses. It all means we must say: “Very well done to the men – and, we ladies….we must do better”

Last, but not least for this latest round-up of Sidmouth Bowls Club news, last Saturday our players travelled through horrendous wind and rain to play at Vivary Park Taunton.

It was a most worthy journey for, at teatime, they served a lovely cream tea with homemade scones which were made by the gentleman who also served the tea!

As for the match result – that proved to be a Sidmouth success with our top team being the one of Tony Anthony, Clive Brook and skip Mick Cox who won by 20 shots to 11. All in all, it proved to be certainly worth making what was a mighty difficult journey given the inclement weather conditions.
