Withy ladies’ are back -and with a new head coach

As lockdown restrictions begin to ease and early pre-season training gets underway, ahead of the 2021/22 rugby season, Withycombe RFC have announced that Molly Tregedeon has been named as the Withy ladies team head coach.

Molly is already well known by the team as she was the co-captain alongside Carol Glover for the 2019/20 season and what was ultimately a cancelled 2020/21 season.

Molly will take over as head coach from Doug Wibberley who has held the role for the past three years.

Doug a highly respected coach and has seen the Withy ladies go from strength to strength to become the successful team we have now going into the new season.

Doug, speaking in general to the ladies’ team, said of his departure: “It has been an incredible honour to coach you all over the past three years, with a lot of laughter and some fantastic rugby”.

Doug also lavished praise on his replacement saying: “Molly has played rugby for a number of years and has a fantastic knowledge of the game and has been a key player at Withycombe for a number of years”.

Adam Curtis, another stalwart of all things Raleigh Park said: “As a club, we certainly want to extend a massive thank you to Doug for all he has done over the three years he has been with the ladies team.

“Indeed, we are looking forward to his continuing support of the ladies – and maybe even seeing him have a run out on the pitch for the 1st and, or, 2nd VX  next season.”

In terms of the new ladies’ head coach, Molly, who will be looking to use her experience of the team both on and off the pitch, will be joined by George Toomey and Scott Todd who will work as team coaches and the trio will continue to build the ladies side and prepare them for the upcoming season, which will be hopefully getting underway in September.

Speaking following her appointment, Molly said: “It is very exciting to be coaching the ladies team.

“I’ve previously coached junior girl’s rugby and missed being involved in the coaching side so I am excited to continue my coaching with the ladies.

“I definitely need some support though and am very grateful that I have a good support network at Withycombe to help me out during my first season.

“I have lots to learn about coaching ladies rugby, but am looking forward to getting the team back together and having a great season as well as developing myself as a coach.”

Withy ladies begin their return to post-lockdown rugby at Raleigh Park this Saturday (April 10) and will then have fortnightly circuits and COVID-safe rugby training.

These sessions are for both new and existing players. Those interested can contact Molly by email at molly.tregedeon@withycomberugby.co.uk or you can message the rugby club directly through social media.

The final word rests with Adam [Curtis] who says: “As a club we wish Molly the very best of luck in her new role and will support her wherever necessary and we very much look forward to seeing her and the rest of the ladies returning to full rugby action at Raleigh Park very soon!”
